Metal Roofing & Installation FAQ
Will a metal roof be louder than my asphalt shingles when it rains?
No. With proper installation over solid decking and insulation, a metal roof is no louder than asphalt shingles. The key is the layers underneath—your roof deck, underlayment, and attic insulation all absorb sound. If you’re inside a building with exposed metal roofing and no insulation (like a pole barn), that’s when you hear noise. In your home, you won’t notice a difference.
What happens if we get hail? Will my metal roof dent?
Stone-coated metal shingles are highly resistant to hail damage. The stone coating absorbs impact, and the metal itself is 26-gauge steel designed to withstand Wisconsin storms. If you do get denting from severe hail (we’re talking golf ball-sized or larger), it’s typically cosmetic and doesn’t affect the roof’s performance. Compare that to asphalt shingles, which can crack or lose granules from hail, leading to leaks. Most importantly, metal roofing often qualifies you for lower insurance premiums—about 7% on average—because insurers know it holds up better.
I've heard metal roofs attract lightning. Should I be worried?
This is a myth. Metal roofing does not attract lightning—lightning strikes the highest point in an area regardless of material. Actually, metal roofing is safer if lightning does strike because it’s non-combustible and disperses the electrical charge. Asphalt shingles can catch fire; metal roofs can’t. No special lightning protection is needed beyond what any home should have.
Metal roofing costs more upfront—will I actually save money in the long run?
Yes, and here’s the math: Metal roofing typically costs 2-3 times more than asphalt initially, but lasts 50+ years versus 20-25 years for asphalt. You’ll replace an asphalt roof twice, maybe three times, in the lifespan of one metal roof. Add in the energy savings—metal roofing reduces cooling costs by about 10% because it reflects heat rather than absorbing it (your attic stays around 89°F instead of 147°F with asphalt). Factor in potential insurance discounts and fewer repairs, and most homeowners break even within 15-20 years, then enjoy decades of savings.
Will my metal roof rust over time?
Not if it’s installed correctly. Modern metal roofing has multiple protective layers: a galvanized or galvalume coating on the steel, a primer, and a baked-on finish. Stone-coated metal shingles add another layer of protection. Rust only becomes an issue if the protective coating is damaged (like cut edges during installation) and those areas aren’t sealed, or if you’re in a coastal saltwater environment (not an issue in Wisconsin). Your warranty covers corrosion for decades—we offer up to 50-year coverage. Proper flashing around penetrations and valleys is critical, which is why professional installation matters.
How long does it take to install a metal roof?
Most residential metal roofing projects take 3-5 days. The timeline depends on your roof’s size, complexity, and pitch. Metal roofing requires more precision than asphalt—every panel must be measured, cut, and fastened correctly because there’s no margin for error like overlapping shingles provide. Flashing details around chimneys, valleys, and wall intersections take extra time to waterproof properly. If we’re installing stone-coated metal shingles, the process is closer to asphalt timing (2-3 days for most homes) because they install more like traditional shingles. Standing seam metal panels require more specialized work and take longer. Weather plays a bigger role too—metal can’t be safely installed in high winds or on wet surfaces. The extra time is worth it: you’re getting a roof that lasts 50+ years versus 20-25 for asphalt, so a few extra days upfront means decades without worry.
Can metal roofing be installed over my existing asphalt shingles, or does everything need to be torn off?
It depends on your roof’s condition and local building codes. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over one layer of asphalt shingles, which saves on tear-off and disposal costs. However, we don’t recommend it in most situations. Here’s why: if there’s any rot or damage underneath those old shingles, we won’t discover it until it becomes a bigger problem. Plus, proper ventilation requires removing old materials so we can inspect the deck and install underlayment correctly. Wisconsin’s freeze-thaw cycles are hard on roof decking—we need to see what we’re working with. A full tear-off adds cost upfront but ensures your 50-year roof is built on a solid foundation. The few hundred dollars saved by leaving shingles isn’t worth the risk when you’re investing in a premium roofing system.
Will the color of my metal roof fade over time like I've seen on old metal buildings?
Some fading is normal with any roofing material, but modern metal roofing holds color far better than older agricultural metal you might remember. Today’s stone-coated metal shingles use UV-resistant acrylic coatings baked on at high temperatures, and they’re backed by 30-year color warranties. You’ll see minimal fading—typically less than asphalt shingles, which lose granules and color from sun exposure and weather. The fading that does occur is gradual and uniform, so it’s not noticeable unless you compare it to an unexposed sample years later. Darker colors may show slightly more fade than lighter ones, but we’re talking about subtle shifts over decades, not the dramatic chalking and rust staining you see on old barns or cheap metal panels. If maintaining original color is critical, lighter shades like grays and tans show the least change over time.
